Weekend Preview: Four Nations Cup!

Weekend Preview: Oct. 31st, 2014

As you might have noticed if you’ve checked your calendar lately, there are no CWHL games this weekend. This is not a mistake! The Four Nations cup is coming up, and players have already left their teams for national camps.

So, we thought we’d do a quick and dirty primer on the Four Nations Cup Tournament, instead of previewing the CWHL games.

What We’re Reading About Women’s Hockey This Week: Oct. 29

What We’re Reading About Women’s Hockey This Week:

  • Over at Women’s Hockey Life, Mark Staffieri wrote a retrospective piece on Tessa Bonhomme’s international hockey career. Just a quick disclaimer– this post is a bit flowery in its descriptions of Bonhomme, and it falls into the trap that many profiles of athletes, but especially female athletes do, that of placing all of Bonhomme’s worth as an athlete second to her ability to be a role model and an inspiration to future generations. We at Watch This think that, while Bonhomme is an excellent role model and sporting hero, it is important to celebrate her athletic accomplishments, and not just her role model status.
  • Outside of the women’s hockey world, you may have heard about several women’s soccer players bringing a lawsuit against the intended use of artificial turf at the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Recently, retaliation claims were added to the lawsuit after players were forced to remove themselves from the legal action for fear of retaliation from FIFA, soccer’s governing body, and several national soccer organizations such as the Canadian Soccer Association.
  • We had some trades this past weekend! The Brampton Thunder traded defense Tara French to the Toronto Furies in exchange for defense Leah Whittaker and Candice Styles. Tara French hadn’t played any games this season for Brampton before her trade, but has been with them since the 2012/2013 season. She posted 8 points in her time with Brampton, 2 goals and 6 assists.

CWHL Weekend Game Review: October 24-26th 2014

Calgary took Montreal two of three this weekend to remain at the top of the league standings, albeit with several more games than most other teams in the league. Toronto won their second shoot out this season, against a physical Brampton team who out-shot them.

CWHL Weekend Preview: October 24th-26th, 2014

We’re coming up on our second full weekend of hockey! Everyone except Boston (officially, at least) is playing this weekend, including an exciting ~Friday~ game! (I love Friday games, y’all. There is nothing better than a Friday afternoon with a hockey game on and maybe some friends over to watch it.)

Things We’ve Been Reading Lately:

Women’s Hockey News For the Week of October 22, 2014

  1. Jason Gregor of the Edmonton Journal talked to Mel Davidson, former coach of the Canadian women’s Olympic team who won gold in 2006 and 2010, current GM for Hockey Canada’s women’s team. She also works with the IIHF’s Ambassador and Mentor program. She had some interesting thoughts about the effects that playing with boys vs. girls at a young age can have on a girl’s hockey development, and the impact on their likelihood to stay in hockey.

“The girls’ game is very different,” Davidson said. “It’s a puck-possession game; there are a lot more puck touches in our game, at the minor level, than there is at the guy’s level.

You Give Love A Bad Name: The CWHL, Marketing, And Me

CWHL logo

I’ve spent a considerable amount of time trying to tease out my frustration with the CWHL. I am a supporter of the CWHL, both in the more nebulous blog-writing way and the more concrete “encourage people to contribute financially to it” way. But that doesn’t mean I think there’s no room for them to improve. They are, unfortunately, a league that has placed itself in the shadow of the NHL, without much actual support from said league.

Pre-Season Preview: Montreal Stars!

Pre-Season Preview: Montreal Stars!

This is not as thorough a preview as we did for the other teams. This is not because we are hating on Montreal, but more because I’ve been sitting on their review for forever, trying to wrack my brains and put together more analysis than “eh, I think they’ll be okay”. In the interest of getting this preview out before the season actually starts, here you go:

Montreal is probably going to be pretty good.
